How to Improve Fluency and Coherence for IELTS Speaking
Fluency is not simply speed. A clear response with natural pauses is more useful than a rushed answer full of repairs. Coherence is how easily a listener can follow your ideas from beginning to end.

Answer first, then develop
For most short questions, give your direct position early. Then add a reason and a specific detail. This basic pattern stops answers from wandering before they begin.
For example, instead of listing several hobbies, choose one and explain when you do it and why you enjoy it.
Replace fillers with useful pauses
A short pause to think is normal. Repeated fillers often make an answer harder to follow because they interrupt the main idea. Record yourself and count only the fillers that add no meaning.
Use a pause before a new point, then restart with a simple connector such as 'because', 'for example', or 'the main reason is'.
Practise one repair at a time
When an answer breaks down, do not restart from the beginning every time. Learn to repair it naturally: clarify the noun, correct one word, or give an example. Real conversation includes small repairs.
After each session, choose one recurring issue for the next attempt. Trying to fix speed, vocabulary, grammar, and pronunciation at once usually produces less improvement.
Key takeaway
Direct answer → reason → detail. Pause instead of filling. Fix one habit per session.
